Oakfield Log Home Seminar Open to Potential Buyers
September 16, 2006
Bangor Daily News - Bangor, Me.
OAKFIELD - Nearly 50 potential home buyers from as far away as Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York will travel to Oakfield today to attend a day-long seminar on building a log home. The seminar, organized by Katahdin Cedar Log Homes, will include a presentation on log home building and a tour of the company's state-of-the-art log home manufacturing facility and mill.
Participants will be able to meet with sales personnel, financing specialists and local real estate brokers. Only a small percentage of the participants actually own the land they plan to build on, said David Gordon, president of Katahdin Cedar Log Homes. Many are coming to buy land in Maine for a retirement or second home.
With a projected 9 percent increase in sales this year, Katahdin Cedar Log Homes is bucking a national trend of declining sales in new homes, as well as within their niche market of log homes.
"We've had a tremendous amount of activity this year," said Gordon. The company received national attention last September when it was featured on a segment of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Katahdin built a custom log home for the family of a Wells lobsterman who had lost an arm in a fishing accident.
In addition to log home buyers, several Katahdin dealers will attend the seminar for training. They plan to use the information they learn to conduct their own local log home seminars. Katahdin has a network of approximately 75 dealers in the U.S. Though the company had limited promotion of the event, the seminar was overbooked quickly, as was the first one conducted earlier this year.
Founded in 1973 by Foster Gordon and two associates, Katahdin Cedar Log Homes is one of the largest log home manufacturers in the U.S. and is the largest processor of northern white cedar in the world. David Gordon continues his father's legacy by providing high-quality cedar log homes at affordable prices. Based in Oakfield, Katahdin Cedar Log Homes is a division of Katahdin Forest Products and has 103 employees. For more information, visit their Web site at www.katahdincedarloghomes.com.
