Gutters or Not — Six Tips for Rain Management

July 14, 2011

We hope you are enjoying the warmer days of summer with family and friends! In the housing business, summer is always a busy time. These short months are the time to take advantage of the longer daylight hours and good weather and get as many log homes into the field as possible. Our fencing business, another season-dependent business, has been running double shifts to keep up with new and replacement fences.

We have enjoyed some positive press this month as well. Check out the article in Maine Ahead, where writer Mike Wolflein writes about how Katahdin’s green initiatives have given us a competitive advantage and enabled us to stay financially strong.

This month’s newsletter gives you a preview of what you might see and learn on a tour of our manufacturing facilities in Oakfield, Maine. We are able to conduct tours on most business days, but it’s a good idea to call ahead if you plan to visit.

The option of including gutters-or not-on your log home is one that may require some forethought. We discuss the pros and cons of both ways, and examine times when rainwater control may be essential to keeping your home in good repair.

One lifestyle option that many families are considering for their log homes is a “man cave.” We take a look at the fun and whimsical options and where to look for ideas.

Finally, we expand on a subject I covered in my LogHome.com webinar last month: how landscaping can cut energy costs and some resources to help you plan plantings.

Gutters or Not — Six Tips for Rain Management

It’s something most people don’t give a lot of thought to-whether to equip their homes with rain gutters or not. Whether or not you use rain gutters completely or on certain roof lines depends on a number of factors. Here are six tips to get you started.

Man Caves are Fun for Everyone

Many log home owners are setting aside a portion of square footage for a gathering place for sports enthusiast, a game room or an opportunity to enjoy and share a special hobby. See how the den has become the modern retreat: man caves!

Katahdin Mill Tours Prove to Be Interesting Summer Diversion

Though Katahdin provides mill tours pretty much any time of year, summertime is probably the best time to stop in and check out how we manufacture our quality products: from log homes to fencing and garden accessories. Check out what’s on the tour here.

Green Tip: Landscaping for Energy Efficiency

The choices you make for landscaping around your log home can provide some easy energy savings if you plan it right. Learn how here.
