Pellet Central Heat, Stained Glass, Permeable Drives

February 12, 2013

February has been heating up, despite what’s happening outside our windows. We’re catching up with many folks who are now reaching the point of selling their existing home or seeing positive signs in their own economies to move ahead with their Katahdin Cedar Log Home.

If you’re ready to take the next step, you should know that mortgage processing is taking a lot longer in this market. Contact the lenders in your market to get a sense of timing so that you don’t miss the best months for building. We’re taking a look at the financing market and hope to have more information soon.

Nothing like the dead of winter to take a look at new heating opportunities, and we’ve found a great alternative to fuel oil: wood pellet central heating, which provides significant cost savings with the simplicity of conventional fuels.

We also explore the colorful options of stained glass windows both inside and on the exterior of log homes. We talked to an expert to find out how to add colorful art glass in your log home. And we explore ways to avoid a new municipal storm water utility tax by installing a permeable driveway.

Wood Pellet Central Heating-Savings Made Simple

Wood pellets have been around for decades, but the conversion into a viable heating solution in the U.S has been slow to catch on. Making wood pellet heat as simple a system as oil heat, has long been a goal of sustainable energy enthusiasts in the U.S. One company has taken on the wood pellet heat solution and created a system that works in just about any residential setting. Stained Glass: A Colorful Log Home Solution

For decorative accent and art appeal, stained glass can provide an expressive and colorful element in a log home. We talk to an expert to get the inside scoop on art glass. Click here to learn more.

We asked, and you answered!

In our last newsletter, we included a brief survey where our readers could share their thoughts and opinions about a number of topics. We found an interesting trend toward energy efficiency and alternative/green features in new homes. See the results.

Green Tip: Permeable Driveways Make Even More Sense

New storm water utility taxes are assessed on the square footage of impermeable surface on your property. We take a look at how permeable driveway treatments can mitigate this potential tax. Check out some options here.
