Root Cellars, Financing Update, Bold Countertops

March 12, 2013

The arrival of Daylight Savings Time couldn’t have come soon enough. We look forward to the sun getting higher in the sky, and warmer and longer days are on the horizon! Here at the mill we’re getting geared up for a busy building season. This newsletter will offer some pointers on getting your own preparations rolling.

One of the most challenging aspects of the log home business is mortgage financing. The recent housing bubble and banking reforms have changed the landscape significantly even for people with stellar credit. We talk to some experts in mortgage financing and offer some helpful tips to get you moving in a positive direction.

Flower shows and seed catalogs get the gardeners among us thinking about the coming vegetable and fruit crops. One challenge for successful gardeners is how to store the bounty from your garden. One solution is adding an old-fashioned root cellar to your home. We’ve got some ideas and resources to help you add a root cellar to your home.

We also take a second look at that retro standby for countertops, Formica®. You may be surprised at how this affordable and stylish product can enhance surfaces in your log home. And our Green Tip this month examines one way to prevent rising damp issues in your basement.

Root Cellars Make a Comeback
Many people are growing their own fruits and vegetables, producing bounteous crops. Even if you’re not tending a garden, storage for seasonal items stockpiled from local farmers markets and backyard crops becomes a challenge. Enter the old-fashioned root cellar. Take a peek here.

Financial Update – What You Need to Know
So you’ve made your decision to build your Katahdin Cedar Log Home. It’s exciting to start with designing your new home, but if you’re financing your purchase there are some steps you should take early in the process. We spoke to some experts about financing log homes and they’ve offered some excellent advice. Read more.

Bold Colors in Countertops!
Formica® passes its century mark this year, and it celebrated with a new colorful line of patterns. Formica® surfaces are such a big part of any retro look, we thought it would be a good time to see what new ideas this company might offer. See what’s new!

Green Tip: Rising Damp Prevention
In recent issues we’ve talked about keeping moisture and radon from accumulating in basement areas through the use of French drains and radon mitigation. Learn about another challenge in concrete slab foundations: rising damp. Read more.
