These are challenging times for all of us but, rest assured, everyone at Katahdin Cedar Log Homes is working hard to keep to our commitments. We have been designated an essential business because of the forest product industry’s importance to Maine. We have taken steps to protect our employees with sanitizing station, social distancing at work and work-from-home capabilities. In our mills, each worker has ample space around him in open airy mill spaces. Our normal on-site protective gear adds an extra layer of protection as we work throughout the day.
How the 2008 Recession Showed Us the Way
The housing crisis in 2008 wreaked havoc on the log home industry. Many log home companies that were overleveraged in the building boom that spurred the decline were ill-prepared to respond to those challenges. We, too, were impacted by the recession, but we kept to our conservative business plan and investments in our mill and personnel truly paid off. We were able to rely on our diversified product lines to help weather the challenges. When business perked back up, we still maintained a conservative approach. We feel we are well-equipped to provide our customers with 
Katahdin Cedar Log Homes in the coming months.
Raw Material Stocks
Because our supplies of Northern White Cedar are harvested and shipped to the mill during the winter months, we already have received our supplies to prepare for milling this season. This inventory will be drawn down to manufacture log home components, as well as our quality cedar fencing — a popular choice for many homes in the Northeast. We remain the largest producer of Northern White Cedar, so once the economy opens back up, we’ll be ready to resume normal production schedules.
Keeping Our Skilled Workforce Healthy
As Katahdin Cedar Log Homes has evolved our manufacturing processes, we are able to maintain our skilled workforce. We’ve taken the time to cross-train workers on all the various planers, saws and processing equipment. Our computerized house line is capable of producing two complete homes per day, so we’ll be well prepared to both continue to produce existing orders in the pipeline, and to offer accelerated turnaround for increased demand down the road.
