For many home buyers, a big part of the log home research process includes visiting a log home show in their area.  However, with quirky winter weather, busy schedules and a limited number of log home shows in certain areas of the country, we’re offering our own Log Home “e-Show.”

We asked Frank Gioffre, Sales Manager and Al Theriault,  Southeast Regional Sales Coordinator to answer some commonly asked questions they hear at log home shows.

Q: What makes Katahdin different from other log home manufacturers?

Frank: To start with, we use Northern White Cedar logs exclusively to construct our log homes. Cedar has some special qualities when compared with pine, including higher insulation value, natural resistance to insects and rot, and lower water content.  Because of these natural qualities, Katahdin can avoid long-term kiln drying required to remove water and kill pests in pine, which can damage the structure of the log. Northern White Cedar is an abundant product and is grown in responsibly managed forests in Maine. Also, cedar’s low moisture content makes it easier to both apply and maintain interior and exterior stains and finishes.

Q: You’ve got great designs, but I haven’t been able to pick a favorite that meets my needs. How much does it cost to have my home custom designed?

Al: Katahdin provides custom design services from our top-notch in-house design team at no extra charge for the initial plan and two revisions. In fact, if you have some ideas sketched out and some basic parameters and linear dimensions, we can generate a price for your home, usually within 72 hours. One way to check out more than 400 designs is to browse our Plan Finder  on the website.

Q: How do I know if my budget is realistic?

Frank: We’ve been helping customers price out their homes for many years, and can give you an honest appraisal of whether your square footage requirements are in line with your budget. We’ve also developed relationships with established mortgage companies who understand the log home construction process and can assist you with affordable financing. When you have a conversation with one of our Dealers or a Katahdin Representative, he or she will be able to help you develop a plan to stay within your budget.

Q: How do I find a dealer in my area?

Al: We’ve made it very easy for you  to identify dealers and builders in your area who are familiar with local building requirements and resources.  You can visit our website and use the Find a Dealer locator to generate a list of dealers in your area.  Also, should there be no dealers in your area, our Katahdin Representatives in Oakfield, Me., can work with you directly to walk you through the steps of making your dream log home a reality.

Q: How do I get more information?

Frank: If you haven’t already registered on the website to receive free information, click here. You’ll be asked to provide some basic information— just like we’d ask at a home show— and we’ll send you a full color brochure and follow up with you about your log home questions.
